Choose a symbol from the set of symbols presented for feature layer. The list of symbols is appropriate for the feature type of the layer; for example, if the layer contains polygons, fill symbols will be displayed. If the feature layer contains point features, you can add a symbol based on an image. You'll be able to change the transparency setting of the feature layer symbol by right-clicking the layer in the Contents window and clicking Transparency.
