Level of Detail

Typical Scale: Move the slider to indicate the scale at which this layer should be displayed. Green indicates the range of recommended options for the layer, based on the data extent and feature information. The black mark indicates the current or default value. Settings outside the green area are available, though you should be careful when setting values in this range because increasing the level of detail will also increase the resolution of the displayed symbology and the memory usage for the layer.

Visibility Range: Use these controls to specify whether a layer should be drawn at all scales or if it should not be drawn if it falls outside the thresholds specified. You can specify one or the other of the distance range thresholds or both. Set the threshold value to 0 if you don't want to use it.

The minimum distance is the smallest distance to which this globe can be zoomed in if this layer is displayed. If the distance is any smaller, the layer will not be shown. The maximum distance is the greatest distance to which this globe can be zoomed out if this layer is to be displayed. If the distance is any larger, the layer will not be shown.

For example, suppose a layer contains moderately detailed data that is most useful at medium scales and not useful at very large or very small scales, and you want the layer to only be drawn when the distance is between 500 and 1000 kilometers. In this case, you would specify the minimum distance to be 500 and the maximum distance to be 1,000. In this way, if the globe is zoomed out to 1,500 kilometers or zoomed in to 200 kilometers, the layer will not be drawn.
