Measure
This task may not be available in the current map because its publisher may have disabled it.
This task provides tools that allow you to determine the location and elevation of a point, to determine the length of a vector, to calculate the aggregate length of multisegment lines, and to measure area. Before or after performing each measurement, you can set or change length units or area units, implicitly converting existing measurements. The task also provides a way to store the measurement as a result.
To make a measurement
- Choose the tool you want to use.
- Move the mouse pointer over the map and click as appropriate; for example, a single click with the Point location tool will provide the location and elevation of that point; click once for every vertex of a multisegment line or polygon, and double-click to signal the end of a multisegment line or polygon.
- The measurement will appear in the Measurement Details area.
To move the map while measuring
- You may find that what you want to measure is not completely contained within the current extent of the map; for example, a street or parcel may extend beyond what is visible. In order to move the map as you're measuring, while still maintaining the cumulative total distance or area, you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate in the direction you want, moving the measurement line as you travel; you can optionally click the mouse to capture coordinate points while moving and double-click to end the measurement. You can hold down two arrow keys simultaneously to travel diagonally; for example, hold down the right arrow and the down arrow at the same time to move the measurement southwestward.
To change units
- Either before or after making the measurement, set the appropriate units. If you change units after making the measurement, the current units will convert in the Measurement Details area to the newly selected units.
To store a measurement as a result
- Choose a tool and perform a measurement. You can change the default title in the Measure TItle text area if you want.
- Press the Create Result button. The result will appear in the Results window.
If you double-click a Measure result, the map zooms in with the result at the center of the display. If you right-click a Measure result, you'll see the following context menu from which you can carry out other actions, depending on the geometry of the result:
| Point or Polygon | | Vector or Line | |
You can expand the Send To menu command to show tasks that will accept the geometry of the result as a parameter.
Notes
- Click outside the map display, on the console, for example, to stop sketching the shape on which you are working.
- Press the Esc key to cancel your choice of tool.
