There are several elements of the user interface that you can use to orient yourself and place what you are looking at in context:
- The north arrow points to true north. If you rotate the map, the north arrow will rotate accordingly.
- As you move or fly over the display, the position readout shows the coordinate location of the observer in the coordinate system units you've set in the Units section of the Options dialog, followed by the altitude of the observation point, followed by the name of the nearest city or country within a distance of 10 miles of the target location. You can toggle these elements on and off using the Target Position property options in the Map Display section of the Options dialog.
If you zoom out directly from the target point without changing the target location, using the minus key (-) for example, the location will change depending on the altitude of the observer. For example, if you are zoomed in to a city you'll see its name:
but if you zoom out beyond 7500 miles the position readout shows the country:
- If you've enabled it from the View menu or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+S, a scalebar is located at the lower right corner of the display.
